Tales of Gargoyles Lab / Lesson
Gargoyle made by Tana Thurston Seventh Grade Literature Class

Objectives you are shooting to accomplish:

Learn about folktales in general (purpose, themes, character roles, literary techniques.) You will create your own tale to tell using the gargoyle that yo have created for inspiration.

Materials Needed:
1) Your newly created gargoyle and your imagination.
2) A notebook or computer to gather your thoughts.
3) Internet access to investigate storytelling websites.

Procedure:
Step 1) Link to at least one of the web sites listed below and read the information it contains about folk tales and storytelling.

Step 3)
  1. In the library choose a folk tale to check out or find a folk tale printed on the internet. Ask for help if you are having trouble finding a folk tale. (Make sure that you record all the information about the book or website you found your folk tale. You will need this to make your bibliography).
  2. Pair up with another student and read your folk tale selection to each other. Next try to read it to each other without looking at the book. This will allow you to work on memorizing the tale and telling it in the original oral tradition. You will be asked to tell your tale to the group as a storyteller.
  3. Following this task write a written response about the tale that you have told and the tale that you have heard. Turn this response into Mr. Williams.

Components that you need to talk about in your written response are:
  • Talk about and Analyze the THEME, MAJOR CONFLICT, and SETTING of your story.
  • Create a handout that details your findings and be prepared to present it to the class.
    • You will be graded on the contents as well as the presentation of your handout.
  • Take a long hard look at your new creation. Then decide upon a name for your stone creature. Then you will need to brainstorm about some background information on your new friend. Some ideas that you might want to think about might include:
    • Where and when was your gargoyle born.
    • Describe about its family and friends.
    • What kind of personality does your gargoyle have?
    • How did it get its distinctive features?
    • Who or what are its best friends?
    • What does it like to do? Where has it already traveled? Where would it like to go?
  • Write a tale about your gargoyle. You will need to work and incorporate a positive message associated with your tale. Anyone can focus on negative thoughts. It is the winners who focus on positives. I will expect that you incorporate your brainstormed ideas into this positive message. The other important point to this story is that it is a story that a lot of people can understand and enjoy. Work on learning your tale to tell to others.
